Artist Statement
I like to work at the intersection of cinema and translation, probably due to the fact I worked at a video rental store in order to learn English to survive the life of a transplant stranded on Occupied Dakota land. My creative output has taken the shape of playlists, short films, film programs, performance, workshops, youth mentorship, writings, translations, conversations, and acts of deep listening. Cinema, to me, is a practice of togetherness, and the act of translation reclaims the liminal space. Together, they allow me to listen with a thousand eyes, feel through a displaced mother tongue, and experiment with my gut.
I make works charged with affect of absence, misunderstandings, and migration, as a way to overlap distant realities. I develop video collages and friendships as methods to shift relational possibilities within text, image, and sound. My commitment lies in listening to the conditions for a transformational attitude to happen. My work exists as an invitation to exchange offerings for our ancestors. They are labors of latitudinal relations and sustained correspondences between resonant encounters, the physical and the spiritual, the surface and the undercurrent.
